Universitat Politècnica de València

Research: Computational Linguistics, Language Engineering, Knowledge Engineering, Natural Language Processing, Text Mining

Profile

Dr Carlos Periñán Pascual studied English Philology at Universitat de València (1992) and received his Ph.D. degree in Philology at UNED (1999). Since his doctoral dissertation on the resolution of word-sense disambiguation in machine translation, his main research interests have included natural language processing (NLP), knowledge engineering, computational linguistics and text mining. As a result, he has developed a number of free-access online computer applications, e.g. ARTEMIS, which automatically generates the semantic structure underlying English texts, DEXTER, which serves to compile, manage and explore specialized-domain corpora for term extraction, DAMIEN, which performs data analysis on text corpora by means of descriptive and predictive statistical measures as well as machine-learning models, and CASPER, which detects natural disasters from Spanish and English messages posted in social networks, among others. He has also been the director of the FunGramKB project since 2004, whose main goal is to develop a lexico-conceptual knowledge base to be implemented in NLP systems requiring language comprehension. In the last two decades, his scientific production includes about 70 peer-reviewed publications, whose impact is reflected in the wide number of citations (over 1,400 citations in Google Scholar, h-index 20). He has actively participated in 13 research projects funded through competitive calls of public or private entities, being the principal investigator in six of them. He has presented research results in 43 scientific events, where he was invited as plenary speaker in six of them. Moreover, he was invited to deliver seminars about knowledge engineering and NLP in Spain (e.g. Universidad de La Rioja, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid) and abroad (e.g. Universita degli Studi di Pavia, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile). It is also important to note that not only he has been a member of the organising committee of 22 R&D activities, where most of them were international conferences (e.g. International Conference on Meaning and Knowledge Representation, International Conference on Corpus Analysis in Academic Discourse), but he has also been a member of several scientific committees (e.g. International Conference on Knowledge Engineering and Ontology Development, International Workshop on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for Emerging Topics, Terminology and Artificial Intelligence Conference, International Workshop on Computational Terminology). He is the editor-in-chief of Journal of Computer-Assisted Linguistic Research since 2017 and member of the editorial board of Revista de Lingüística y Lenguas Aplicadas since 2023. Finally, he has been a university lecturer for over 25 years (e.g. Universitat Jaume I, Universidad Católica San Antonio de Murcia, UNED and Universitat Politècnica de València), with wide experience in postgraduate and doctoral studies (e.g. Máster en Lenguas y Tecnología, Máster de las TIC en la Enseñanza y el Tratamiento de las Lenguas, Máster en Procesamiento del Lenguaje e Inteligencia Artificial), which resulted in the supervision of 7 doctoral theses about knowledge representation and NLP. He is currently a senior lecturer in the Applied Linguistics Department at Universitat Politècnica de València.
